How to Make Easy Summer Treats Kids will Love

On sweltering days, make easy summer treats to cool down the grandkids.

Try three of my favorites, gleaned from the “Call Me Grandma!” archives. You can whip up these frozen desserts in no time, and each is healthfully fruit-based.

Paletas are Mexican ice pops made with fresh fruits.
Delicious paletas are healthy, tasty, refreshing, and so easy to make.

Easy Summer Treats #1: Paletas

Last summer, as a Camp Grandma activity, Miss T and I read, Paletero Man, It’s a charming story about a child in Los Angeles searching for the pushcart vendor who sells paletas, Mexican ice pops.

After reading the story, we went into the kitchen to make our own paletas to bring the story to life. We used organic strawberries from the farmers’ market and the paletas were mouthwateringly delicious!

Easy Summer Treats #2 Canned Fruit Sorbet

Frozen canned fruit can be pureed into a delicious sorbet for an easy summer treat.
Make this scrumptious peach sorbet by freezing a can of fruit and blitzing it in a food processor.

Now this one is counterintuitive. Why would you use canned fruit at the height of the fresh fruit season? The answer is, because this is the easiest summer treat you will ever make! You have to try it to believe how good this sorbet tastes. Even a New York Times food writer raved about this sorbet when it was first introduced years ago.

Easy Summer Treats #3 Banana Pops

Coat frozen bananas in melted chocolate chips and roll in nuts.
Kids as young as five can make these chocolate-covered banana pops.

You may have made these as a kid yourself–frozen bananas coated in chocolate and dipped in nuts. And with such kid-friendly ingredients, what’s not to like? Little N and I made our first batch last year.

    Love the “reruns”!
But a blooper in the banana pops… in the original post, Mr N is not using popsicle sticks, but is using flat BBQ skewers. Those you can get at your local asian grocery store.
