Welcome to my Grandma Blog

When Miss T was born, I was elated, but what should my name be?

“You’re going to be a grandma!”

After the initial euphoria, I mulled over my most important decision: what should I be called?  “Grandma” made me seem so OLD!

Nana? No, that’s what my kids called my mother….

So, I put it to Twitter.

I was deluged with well-meaning suggestions, including some funny grandma names.  Kiki, Mimi…no offense if that’s what you’re called.  It just wasn’t me!

After weeks with no resolution, I finally threw in the towel: just call me grandma!

For the past six years, shout, “Grandma!” and I respond.

What I did Before I was a Grandma

Before I was a grandma, I was a food marketing communications consultant and co-founder of a dinnertime food and recipe website. And before that, I was a senior vice president of a large global public relations agency where I pioneered one of the first food websites nearly 25 years ago, the award-winning recipe.com.

Check out this week’s Grandma Food for easy-to-make, LEGO-style gummy candy. It was a hit at Miss T’s recent birthday party.

Before that, I was a magazine food editor in New York City, and a newspaper food and fashion editor in Honolulu.

And before that, I was a small-town girl from Hilo, Hawaii, with big dreams….

Of all, grandma has been my most satisfying role.

It has given me innumerable creative possibilities for building loving relationships with my grandchildren through crafts, games and other fun activities that I’ll share with you on this blog.

What to Expect from my Grandma Blog

Coming from a food background, sometimes I’ll feature recipes and cooking ideas, such as easy snacks to make with children or just some quick meals you can fix for yourself–because grandmas (and grandpas and parents) are busy people.

On the other hand, some posts will simply be reflections on grandparenting. I welcome your comments and contributions.

I hope you’ll join me on my journey. I’ll be posting to my grandma blog every Wednesday!

Oh, what a joy!! Looking forward to your ideas and enthusiasm. And yes, I’m a “just grandma,” too. Of four. A teen, an almost teen, two elementary kids.

    Good luck!

Thank you, my wonderful artist Instagram friend! I had no idea you had four grandchildren. Love to hear your grandparenting tips, too.
