Halloween Snacks for Kids: Creepy Fingers

String cheese "fingers," spider deviled eggs, and clementine jack-o'-lanterns are Halloween snacks that can fill a lunchbox, too.
In this two-tiered bento box are salami slices, string cheese fingers, spider deviled eggs, grilled sourdough toast, and a clementine jack-o-lantern.

Special occasions call for special food. For Halloween, why not prepare some spooky Halloween snacks for kids? Unlike the typical, sugary treats served at this time of the year, these snacks are healthy–featuring cheese, eggs and fruit.

I combined these snacks into a bento box lunch for Miss T last Halloween. With some grilled sourdough bread and salami slices, it made a yummy themed lunch that was fairly easy to fix.

For Creepy Fingers

  • Lay sticks of light string cheese on a cutting board.
  • Cut some sticks in half crosswise before forming into fingers so you have different lengths.
  • Using a paring knife, score light lines for the finger joints.
  • With a paring knife, slice a bit off the top of the stick lengthwise to form an indentation for the fingernail.
  • Dab a bit of cream cheese on the indentation to use as glue. Affix half a grape tomato peel on the cream cheese to make the fingernail.
  • Cut shallow crosswise notches in the cheese, to make the grooves of the knuckle.

For Spiders

  • Cut a pitted kalamata olive crosswise to form the spider body.
  • Cut another olive lengthwise into thin strips to form the legs.
  • Arrange the body and legs on deviled eggs.

For the Jack-o’-Lantern

  • Draw a face on a clementine or tangerine using a black sharpie.
To decorate a Halloween bento box, add an orange napkin, a black ribbon bow, and a small bat.

Packaging the Bento

To package the bento in Miss T’s double-decker bento box, I added an orange paper napkin, and tied the two boxes together with black ribbon. A small bat added the final touch.

Another way simple to add to the Halloween theme is with food picks or cupcake toppers in the shape of pumpkins, ghosts and other popular motifs that you can find at stores like Michaels or Target.
