Easy, Healthy Halloween Snacks Get into the Spirit
Whether you’re having a party or just wanting to give the grandkids a little themed treat, here are some easy ideas for Halloween snacks you can make.

To replicate each, follow my how-to tips below. Serve your Halloween snacks on black cheesecloth, decorate with plastic spiders, and set out lots of battery-operated tea lights to create a mood.
Halloween Snack Tips

- Grape Eyeballs: Cut a small cross at the tip of a grape using a paring knife. Insert a mini chocolate chip firmly in the center. TIP: The eyeballs are more realistic if you peel the grapes first. To do this, pour boiling water over grapes and let sit a few seconds. Drain water and peel grapes; skins should peel off easily.

- Freaky Fruits: Attach candy eyes to fruits to bring them to ghostly life. Secure eyes with a dab of melted chocolate chips or peanut butter. TIP: It helps to use a small, offset spatula.

- Mini Jack-o-lantern: First, cut a jack-o-lantern face out of an orange using a paring knife. Next, cut off the top of the orange. Hollow out the inside using a spoon (ideally, a serrated grapefruit spoon) and your fingers. Fill the cavity with a few wrapped candies or a small bag of trail mix, and a battery-operated tea light.

- The child can remove the candy, then light the little jack-o-lantern. This jack-o-lantern will keep for a few days. TIP: Blend the innards of the orange with other fruits to make a smoothie.

- Blood-shot Eyes: Peel boiled eggs and halve crosswise. Cut a small slice off the bottom of each egg half. Use a toothpick dipped in plant-based red food coloring to draw squiggly lines on the whites. Top with a slice of pimento-stuffed olive. TIP: For easy-to-peel hard “boiled” eggs, steam them.
Mummy Pizzas
These Halloween snacks are easy to assemble and bake. Kids can help. The recipe makes 4 servings, but you could easily multiply the recipe for more.

Ingredients
- 4 small (5-inch) mini-flour tortillas or 2 English muffins, split and toasted
- Prepared pizza or pasta sauce
- 4 slices pre-sliced jack cheese, cut into 1/2-inch strips
- 4 pimento-stuffed olives or other olives sliced crosswise 1/4-inch thick
Method
Heat over to 375º F. Place flour tortillas on baking sheet. Spread with thin layer of sauce. Lay cheese strips in a zig-zag pattern to form the mummy wrap. Insert two olive slices for eyes between the cheese strips. Bake 3 to 5 minutes until heated through and cheese begins to melt. Remove from oven and wait a minute or so just for cheese to set before serving. But don’t wait too long; pizzas will cool off quickly. Because the tortillas are thin and floppy, cut in quarters with kitchen shears for easier eating.
Makes 4 pizzas.
